Harish Chandra Postgraduate College, Varanasi, is a government-aided institution and a premier educational establishment in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, operating under the Harish Chandra Vidyalaya Samiti, a non-profit charitable organization registered under the Indian Society Act of 1860.
The college was founded in 1866 by Bharatendu Harishchandra, the father of modern Hindi literature, with just five local students. By 1910, it had expanded to include high school classes, and intermediate classes began in 1939.
Undergraduate classes in Arts and Commerce were introduced on October 4, 1951, initially affiliated with Banaras Hindu University. In 1958, the college received recognition for its law classes.
Due to changes in BHU’s regulations, the college switched its affiliation to the University of Gorakhpur in 1960, which also saw the beginning of B.Ed. classes. Subsequently, the college received approval for B.Sc. classes in the Mathematics group in 1963 and in the Biology group in 1974.
